Days 9 & 10: My beliefs and what I wear (30 day meme)

I believe that my rights end where yours begin.
I believe your life is yours to do as you wish as long as you don't cause harm by it.
I believe sex is good for you, whether it's by yourself, with a partner or several.
I believe, that if my loved ones see me as somebody good and worth loving, I actually have a chance at becoming that person.
I believe I am good and worth loving.
I believe universe as a whole doesn't care about you and you propably don't deserve it, if something horrible happens to you.
I believe reading is good for you.
I believe you should have a safe-word established, if you are doing to engage in any rough BDSM.
I believe science and good education are our best hope for survival as a race.
I believe it's important to be able to relax and take a nap.
I believe it is good to believe as many true things as possible and as few false things as possible.
I believe it is immoral to believe in something you don't have evidence for.
I believe in my work.
I believe I'm going to go and see a movie now.

I believe I'm going to wear jeans and a black t-shirt, like I almost always do.

I believe Tim Minchin is not a god. But god, he is good:

Day 5: Definition of Love (30 day meme)

This is frustrating. Wikipedia says: "Love is the emotion of strong affection and personal attachment. In philosophical context, love is a virtue representing all human kindness, compassion and affection." This totally works for me. But then Wikipedia continues:" In religious context, love is not just a virtue, but basis for all being. ("God is love"), and the foundation for all divine law." And this is where it gets messy. I mean, I know I am the atheist/skeptic/philosophical materialist, who only tries to believe in things that can be verified in a way or another, so I'm not hip to this kind of lingo, but damn, this doesn't clarify anything this kind of nonsense just muddies the issue. 'Love' becomes something nebulous and mostly meaningless when you say something like "Love is the foundation of divine law." Nobody knows what that means!

A dear friend of mine, Jara, is such a fucking hippie* he sometimes makes me want to cry. We once had a annoying discussion:
Jara: The true nature of Universe is love.
Me: What does that mean?
Jara: If you love, your love will be returned.
Me: So I guess the people who were killed in the Rwandan genocide just didn't love enough.
Jara: They were destroyed by hate of others.
Me: The machetes and AK47's really helped.
Jara: Those were just the tools of hate.
Me: So hate conquers love, when it has the right tools?
Jara: Love always wins in the end.
Me: What does that mean?
Jara: In the end, there is always love. That is what we mean when we say 'Universe'.
Me: No. When we say 'Universe' we mean all the all the matter, radiation, void and forces that make up our physical reality.
Jara: That's not what I mean by it.
Me: Is there any point in continuing this discussion, before we can even agree what do the words mean?
Jara: Like what?
Me: At least love and universe seem to need defining.
Jara: I thought I just defined them.
Me: To me, that was only confusing.

I know it's difficult word to pin down as it is, but it just gets more confusing when you add spiritual** nonsense on top of it. I'll stick to "Love is the emotion of strong affection and personal attachment" for now. But in practice I do feel that love is in the actions you take. Love that doesn't manifest in actions, isn't anything important. If you love me, I need to see it some way or it doesn't matter. If I love you, I try to make sure that you can see it affecting your life.

ExpandSmall rant on hippies after the cut. And spirituality. And some sweet beat poetry by Tim Minchin. )

Day 4: What I ate today (30 day meme) and Operation Vinegar Death!

Just had a small breakfast with a couple of slices of bread with low-fat cheese and some fruit salad, topped with a HUGE cup of tea that I'm still drinking. In the weeks between touring I try my best to eat a bit lighter, because on the road you usually eat what you can get, which mostly ends up being some random pizza or some food from a gas station. Almost never anything healthy.

I'm leaving for Kemijärvi tonight. It's in Lapland, which is the northern part of Finland. Last time we toured there we were regularly amazed how good the food was and how every small town had their own little specialties for hungry traveler to eat. We'll see what Kemijärvi has to offer! Next week I'll be touring with Carin and we haven't been on the road together before. Sure, we know each other pretty well from before, but it is a different thing to work so closely with somebody for a week in a row. I'm sure it will be fun!

Before I leave, I'll do a thorough clean-up put all non-dry food items into the cooler. I have an infestation of fruit flies in my kitchen and now THEY MUST DIE! So, in addition to the starvation, I'll be setting up some trap bowls, that should lure the fuckers into an early watery death. Bowls will have liquid that will consist of 1/2 water, 1/2 vinegar and few drops of dishwasher. The idea is that the flies will find the vinegar irresistible and land on it, but since the dishwasher destroys water's surface tension, they just get sucked in. Genius! Operation Vinegar Death is on the way!
